Long Range Forecast – June 12, 2026
Disclosure Day | Universal
Domestic Opening Weekend Range: $40M – $50M
Steven Spielberg returns to alien spectacle with Disclosure Day, the director’s first theatrical release since 2022’s The Fablemans and first sci-fi outing since 2018’s Ready Player One. The latter film opened to $41.7M en route to a $137.6M domestic total, numbers Disclosure Day is expected to meet or exceed. Word of mouth will be key here; though Ready Player One is based on a best-selling book, Disclosure Day is original IP, so more casual moviegoers may wait to hear more before buying their tickets.
Among recent sci-fi films not part of a pre-existing franchise, the one to beat (at least in terms of box office) is Project Hail Mary ($80.5M domestic opening), which opened in late March of this year and was still in the top ten as of Memorial Day weekend. Other comps include 2018’s A Quiet Place ($50.2M domestic opening), co-starring Disclosure Day‘s Emily Blunt, 2022’s Nope ($44.3M domestic opening), and 2023’s The Creator ($14M domestic opening).
Of the aforementioned films, only one—Jordan Peele’s Nope—came out during the summer movie season, the others opting for less competitive release corridors. In terms of summer sci-fi releases, omitting those films from superhero franchises, the best comp for Disclosure Day would be A Quiet Place: Day One, which opened to $52.2M in late June 2024.
